E Kūkulu Ke Kahua a Pa‘a

About TSETS: E Kūkulu Ke Kahua a Pa‘a

The overall goal of this five-year project, E Kukulu Ke Kahua a Paa: Build the Foundation until Firm, is to build K-12 mathematics instructional capacity on Kaua‘i by providing on-going, sustained teacher professional development (PD) at three target schools: Kanuikapono Public Charter School, Kawaikini New Century Public Charter School, and Kapa‘a Middle School, each with math proficiency levels of 20%, 23% and 17% respectively (all below state and complex averages). In Year 2 of the project, Kapa‘a Elementary was identified as a fourth target school, extending the grant's reach to include teachers and academic coaches from this additional school site.

The E Kūkulu Ke Kahua a Pa‘a project addresses low math proficiency at the target schools through three objectives and their supporting activities:

  1. Increase the effectiveness (knowledge and quality) of K-12 mathematics instruction through a sustained, three-year professional development (PD) and mentorship program for at least 15 Kaua‘i K-8 teachers that focuses on improving conceptual understanding of mathematics and pedagogy.
  2. Develop and improve curriculum, assessments, and rubrics for five elementary grade levels.
  3. Build high quality mathematics pathways for grades K-8 to achieve alignment with high school, dual credit mathematics, which will reduce the need for remedial instruction and create adequate preparation for Native Hawaiian students’ successful matriculation to postsecondary education.
