The best way to explain why I’m back in college is to tell you why this isn’t the right time. I don’t have extra days in my week. I don’t have more time in my day. I don’t have extra money or a job that would tolerate a student’s schedule.

All these things have been true since I quit college at 19 after only one year. I immediately started work and have been employed since. Without a degree, through determination and hard work, I’ve had professional, respectable jobs. So what motivates a 35-year-old with a full-time job to go back to school, especially if there is no extra time or money?

Often we think of education only as vehicle to a better paycheck. Which isn’t wrong. Get educated, get a degree, get a better job, make a better living. That’s true, but it’s not the only reason to go to college. The more you learn, the more versatile, experienced and valuable you become, and that often translates into a better wage. But what other benefit is there if not money?

I’m at KCC because I want to be a better version of who I am and achieve my personal goals. I want to finish what I start, even when it seems impossible. Even if I have to find time and money that doesn’t seem to exist and I have to get a different job to accommodate my classes. For me, college is about personal achievement and finding value in yourself. It’s about making connections with the people around you and learning from them while being creative, thoughtful and collaborative.

As I graduate this December (pending upcoming finals!), I am proud of myself and I am so thankful for all the support of my family and friends. Their advice has always been that I can do anything I set my mind to. I believe that. And I believe you can do it, too - even if it isn't the right time.
